AI Search Is Changing Fort Wayne SEO: 5 Months of Real Data
Five months of real Fort Wayne SEO data: calls, bot traffic, AI citations, and what changed as Google AI Overviews reshaped local search.

In November 2025, a Fort Wayne local garage door company launched a new website into the worst search climate in a decade.
Five months later:
Calls up 16% year over year.
Google’s AI quoting the business by name.
And one “breakthrough” traffic month that turned out to be 62% robots.
That last one is my favorite.
Because we could have dropped the traffic chart into a report, circled it in green, added a rocket emoji, and called ourselves geniuses.
We checked the data instead.
Turns out the robots were having a hell of a month.
This is the month-by-month story — straight from the client report we actually sent.
The Setup: A New Site, the Worst Possible Timing
The client is Fort Wayne Door & Dock.
Garage doors.
Repairs.
Docks.
Real trucks.
Real technicians.
Real customers who need somebody to answer the phone when something breaks.
The new site went live November 13, 2025.
Which, in hindsight, was a little like opening a restaurant the week somebody tore up the street in front of it.
Google’s AI Overviews were changing the way people used search.
Organic click-through rates were falling on queries where AI answers appeared.
And real-world browsing data showed people were significantly less likely to click a traditional result after Google had already answered the question for them.
So we built the program for that reality from day one.
Technical SEO and schema for the rankings.
Structured content for AI citations.
Google Business Profile as a primary channel.
And — this part matters most for everything below — call tracking in two independent systems.
Because we suspected the phone was about to become one of the few metrics that couldn’t lie.
If you just want the headline numbers, they’re on the proof page.
This post is the story of how they happened.
December Through April: What the Phone Actually Did
Every call below is confirmed.
Tracked either directly through Google Business Profile or through CRM organic attribution.
Cross-verified.
No estimates.
Call volume finished 16% higher year over year:
367 confirmed organic calls across five months.
GBP direct calls:
- December: 44
- January: 47
- February: 41
- March: 50
- April: 56
CRM organic calls:
- December: 25
- January: 37
- February: 27
- March: 19
- April: 21
Total: 367 confirmed organic calls.
Read the shape.
Not just the total.
January spiked because web-tracked organic calls jumped to 37 while the new site’s pages were freshly indexed.
February dipped.
Seasonality happens.
And April is the quiet headline:
56 Google Business Profile direct calls.
The strongest GBP month on record for this business.
In the exact month the SEO industry was complaining loudest about AI eating clicks.
Apparently nobody told the phone.
Confirmed organic calls by month, Dec 2025–Apr 2026. GBP direct: 44, 47, 41, 50, 56. CRM organic: 25, 37, 27, 19, 21. Total: 367 — call volume up 16% YoY (owner-confirmed; matches the client report).
Surprise #1: The Best Traffic Month Was 62% Robots
In November, GA4 reported 891 sessions.
Nearly double the baseline.
You know the chart.
Big line.
Up and to the right.
The kind of thing that renews retainers.
We investigated instead of celebrating.
Starting in fall 2025, GA4 properties were getting hammered with automated traffic.
For this client:
- 67.6% of October’s reported sessions were unengaged bot traffic
- 62.4% of November’s reported sessions were unengaged bot traffic
December reported 960 sessions.
Only 454 were real engaged sessions.
Which means the best-looking traffic period in the report was also the least trustworthy.
So we did something revolutionary.
We told the client.
No victory lap.
No “record-breaking traffic” slide.
No pretending we caused a bunch of servers somewhere to visit the website.
We moved reporting away from raw sessions and started paying much closer attention to engaged traffic.
And the honest number turned out to be a better story anyway.
Bot-adjusted engaged traffic grew 21%, from a pre-spike baseline of roughly 223 engaged sessions per month to approximately 269 per month by spring.
Smaller number.
Better story.
Because it was real.
Reported vs. engaged sessions at the peak of the bot wave. November engaged = 891 reported − 556 unengaged. GA4 marks a session engaged only after 10+ seconds, 2+ pageviews, or a conversion — bots almost never qualify.
Surprise #2: The Customer Journey Moved
Here’s where the numbers start looking weird if you’re still thinking about SEO the old way.
The old path was easy to understand:
Search → website → call
Now the path can look more like:
Search → AI answer → business → call
The customer still finds you.
The lead still happens.
It just may never touch your website.
Which means GA4 never sees it.
That creates a much more useful question for a Fort Wayne business:
When Google’s AI answers “who fixes garage doors near me?” is your company in the answer?
Because if the customer gets enough information from Google to choose a business and call directly, losing the website click does not necessarily mean losing the customer.
The journey changed.
That’s different.
What Happened With Fort Wayne Door & Dock?
Five months.
December 2025 through April 2026.
While the search industry was debating whether AI was killing SEO:
- 367 confirmed organic phone calls
- 238 tracked through Google Business Profile
- 129 through CRM organic attribution
- Two systems. Not estimates.
- AI citations grew 4×
- From 10 in September 2025
- To 41 by April 2026
- Tracked through SEMrush AI Visibility
- Google Business Profile views increased 41.2% year over year
- Organic search sessions increased 16% year over year
- Using real, bot-filtered traffic
- #1 authority score against every local competitor
Read that list again.
The number I care about most is not traffic.
It’s this:
367 people called.
Because rankings matter.
Visibility matters.
Traffic matters.
AI citations matter.
But eventually somebody has to pick up the damn phone.
That’s where marketing turns into an opportunity.
SEMrush AI SEO tracking, Sep ’25–Apr ’26. Citations: 10, 10, 11, 13, 22, 32, 43, 41. Mentions: 6, 6, 2, 3, 5, 8, 16, 19. Zero-based axis; the November dip is real and explained below.
What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
Plainly:
Traditional SEO helps you earn the ranking.
Answer Engine Optimization helps you become part of the answer.
Instead of asking only:
“How do we get this page to rank?”
we also need to ask:
“How do we make this business and its content useful enough to get cited when an AI system answers the customer’s question?”
We think about that in three connected layers.
SEO Builds Authority
Keywords.
Technical health.
Schema.
Backlinks.
Site architecture.
Local relevance.
Useful content.
Traditional SEO did not suddenly stop mattering.
AI systems still need evidence that helps them understand who you are, what you do, and whether the information looks credible.
The foundation is still the foundation.
AEO Builds Credibility
Answer Engine Optimization focuses on clearly answering the questions buyers are actually asking.
Pricing.
Timelines.
Comparisons.
Service questions.
Problems.
Options.
Buying decisions.
Not:
“10 Garage Door Tips You Won’t Believe!”
Nobody asked for that.
Answer the actual question.
Make the answer clear.
Make it useful.
Make it specific.
That gives both customers and machines something worth citing.
GEO Builds Brand Visibility
Generative Engine Optimization looks at whether the brand itself is showing up when AI systems recommend or discuss businesses.
For a local company, that visibility can be influenced by things like:
- Local authority
- Google Business Profile
- Reviews
- Service-area relevance
- Helpful content
- Structured information
- Brand mentions
- Local press
- Consistent business information
The goal is not to repeat “best garage door company Fort Wayne” until ChatGPT gives in from exhaustion.
The goal is to build enough evidence around the company that recommendation systems have reasons to trust it.
Authority.
Credibility.
Visibility.
In that order.
| Keyword | Position | Result type | Searches/mo |
|---|---|---|---|
| garage door repair fort wayne | #1 | AI Overview | 320 |
| garage door spring repair | #1 | Local pack | 260 |
| fort wayne garage door repair | #1 | Local pack | 70 |
| emergency garage door service near me | #1 | Local pack | 10 |
| garage door | #2 | Local pack | 70 |
| garage door opener repair | #2 | Local pack | 40 |
| urgent garage door repair | #2 | Local pack | — |
| garage door opener | #4 (+96) | Local pack | 110 |
SEMrush Position Tracking, May 6, 2026. “Garage door opener” jumped 96 positions — from unranked to #4 — the largest single move of the campaign.

What Should Fort Wayne Businesses Do Right Now?
Find Out If AI Cites You
Search the questions your customers actually ask.
Ask Google.
Ask ChatGPT.
Look at the AI-generated results.
Who gets named?
Who gets cited?
Who gets recommended?
You?
Or the company down the street?
Traditional rank tracking cannot show you that entire picture anymore.
Treat Your Google Business Profile Like a Primary Channel
For a local service business, Google Business Profile is not the little box somebody updates when your Christmas hours change.
It’s part of the customer journey.
Calls.
Directions.
Reviews.
Photos.
Services.
Trust.
Local discovery.
This client’s Google Business Profile generated 238 direct calls during the five-month period.
That is not a side metric.
That is lead generation.
Build Content That Answers Questions, Not Content That Chases Keywords
If your content strategy is:
“We need four blogs this month.”
I have a follow-up question.
Why?
Write the answers your customers actually need.
How much does this cost?
How long will it take?
Repair or replace?
What causes the problem?
Which option should I choose?
What should I expect?
What makes one provider different from another?
AI engines cite sources that resolve the question.
Customers like those too.
Convenient.
Track Citations, Mentions, GBP Actions, and Confirmed Calls
Rankings still matter.
Traffic still matters.
But those numbers are no longer enough by themselves.
We also want to know:
- Are AI systems citing the business?
- Are they mentioning the brand?
- Is Google Business Profile visibility growing?
- Are customers taking action?
- Are confirmed calls increasing?
- Are those calls becoming real opportunities?
We’ve been tracking AI visibility for clients since 2025.
Not because “AEO” sounds cool in a sales deck.
Because customers are using search differently.
The measurement has to follow them.
What Should You Stop Doing?
Stop worshipping raw traffic.
Judging your marketing by total sessions is like judging a salesperson by how many business cards they hand out.
The number goes up.
The number goes down.
Neither tells you whether anyone bought anything.
And stop accepting reports built entirely around it.
If your SEO report leads with:
Traffic.
Impressions.
Rankings.
And then somehow runs out of room before it gets to:
Calls.
Qualified leads.
Booked work.
Revenue.
You have a reporting problem.
The demand in your market did not necessarily shrink.
It may be flowing through a different pipe.
The only question is whether your business is showing up where the customer is now looking.
